Break / Come to an end or a point of conclusion
不断 (bú duàn) Continuously Literal. No break;断气 (duàn qì) Die Literal. Break in the flow;断交 (duàn jiāo) Cut ties – friendship(s) or diplomatic relation(s) Literal. 藕断丝连 (ǒu duàn sī lián) Undying romance *Literal. The lotus root may break but strands (fibers) remain attached* – lovers are separated but even so, their hearts stayed mutually attached. These days, it is often used to describe a person who has not found proper closure from a previous relationship.
